Mozambique – Maputo :
On Friday 3rd Sept. 11:30 rumors of new riots rose and it has been decided (all shipping agencies and FFws) to close the office until 06/09/2010. General Cargo Vessel have stopped operations. Container vessels have started back operation this morning (03/09/2010) and a minimum service will be provided over the week-end.

(a) Bulk Sugar Terminal : Set up in 1981, the Mauritius Sugar Terminal Corporation has dedicated terminal for the loading of bulk sugar with a quay length of 198 metres and which can accommodate vessels with drafts up to 11 metres. A pneumatic pump is used to load sugar from two storage sheds, each with a storage capacity of 175,000 tonnes, at a rate of 1,450 tonnes per hour.  

(b) Cement : The unloading of cement is done by a pneumatic unloader, situated between Quays No. 1 & 2, at an hourly rate of 450 tonnes, into silos of 95,500 tonnes. There are two reception & processing plants, located near the quays, namely Holcim (Mauritius) Ltd. and Lafarge (Mauritius) Cement Ltd.
 
(c) Wheat : Wheat is discharged in bulk at Quay D by a mobile pneumatic ship unloader and transferred by conveyors to the adjacent storage silos of 40,000 tonnes capacity. The wheat is processed by Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée.
 
(d) Fertilizers and Other Products : The Mauritius Chemical and Fertilizer Industry Ltd and Island Fertilizers Ltd. are responsible for the import, processing and distribution of fertilizers. Storage facilities for 4,600 tonnes of tallow and 1,000 tonnes of caustic soda are also available at Terminal II.
 

(e) Ship Repairs : Private dry-docking and ships’ repairs facilities, which can accommodate vessels of up to 100 metres LOA together with a slipway of 30 metres long, are available at Terminal I. Another privately owned 150-metre dry docking facility together with a workshop for ships’ construction and repairs, is operational at Terminal ll.

(f) The actual Discharge Rate is around 340/350 mtons per hour and pumping is effected on a round the clock basis, including Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. The methods used is either ship's pumping facilities, in case of Lafarge and pneumatic unloader (Kovaco) for Holcim.


Annual throughput capacity : 550,000 TEUs.

 

Restrictions

(a) LOA of berth : 180 meters - at Quay No 2 , but longer vessels can be accomodated as berths 2, 3 and 4 are aligned berths totalling to 550 meters.

(b) Port Entrance is dredged to 12.8 meters

(c) Channel : 12.8 M

(d) Depth of water alongside is 12.2 mts but maximum permissible draft of vessels is 11 meters.

(e) Turning Basin : 12 M

There is no beam and no air draft limitation.

(a) Bunkers available IFO 180 Cst and Marine GasOil, ex pipeline and/or by barge. Only Shell has barge facilities, and the other suppliers have shore side facilities only. 

(b) Cyclonic and rainy season is from December to April.  Port is normally closed when a Class II warning is in force and all vessels have to leave the port until the reopening of the port.
